Google analytics now shows searched keywords and phrases to your website

Google analytics now integrates the Google search console. Why is this important?

Well, it’s IMPORTANT because the search console includes important ranking information like the keywords and phrases used to click to your website and the number of these searches made and such like.

A few years ago Google analytics used to give you this information but stopped giving this information and would only give you information like this based on clicks from a Google adwords campaign.

So if you had been search engine optimising your website then Google analytics wasn’t giving this basic information.

It would tell you the number of visitors to your website and even who referred the visit on a particulate day or time period , for instance what search engine or website they come from but would not tell you what search term was used.

So frustratingly you would not know what search term or keyword was bringing in these visitors!

Now with Google analytics you can integrate search console so you have all this information together.

To integrate the Search Console and Google Analytics you will will need to do the following:

Set Up a Search Console Account
(If you already have an account, you can move on to the next section)

If you don’t you need to do this

Enable the Search Console Data Import in Google Analytics.

To create an account, go to Search Console and click Add Property. Then add your site.
Next, you’ll have to verify that you own your site.

In Search Console, you will need to verify that you own your website. You can do this a few different ways:

HTML file upload
HTML tag
Domain name provider
Google Analytics
HTML file upload (Google’s preferred method): Google provides a file you need to upload to your site. You’ll then confirm the upload and verify your ownership.

HTML tag: Search Console gives you a tag to add to your website. Once in place, Google can verifying your ownership.

Domain name provider: You can choose a provider from a large dropdown menu. If you’re not sure how to find your domain host, Google has documentation to walk you through it.

Google Analytics: Your tracking code has to be in the right location and you need “Edit” permissions for this to work. If that’s all in place, you can just click verify and your Google Analytics and Search Console accounts will be linked.

Google Tag Manager(my preferred method): You need to be using the container snippet and have “Manage” permissions in GTM for this to work. If so, you can click verify and you’ll be good to go.

Enable the Search Console Data Import in Google Analytics
Go to your Google Analytics account
Go to Acquisition (left sidebar) > Search Console
Click the Set up Search Console data sharing button
Choose your Search Console account

It might seem complicated but it really isn’t. The time taken is worthwhile because now you can see WHAT SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISED WORDS AND PHRASES ARE NOW WORKING ON YOUR WEBSITE.
